The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) is designed to match Washington University undergraduates with available research positions in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.  Doing research as an undergraduate is a good way to learn an area in depth and to get to know a faculty member well.  It can also help you decide whether to go to graduate school, and give you an edge in graduate school admissions or employment opportunities.

It's very easy to get involved.  Browse the UROP listings on this website. Some projects are offered for academic credit, others for pay, and some for either pay or credit.   If you see projects that interest you, contact the faculty members listed to find out more.  Even if you don't have time for research this semester, you may want to plan now for a future one.

Keep in mind that not all research projects are listed here.  If your research interests don't happen to be represented in these listings, consult the Department of Computer Science and Engineering web site for a listing of faculty and their research interests, and contact those faculty with interests similar to yours.

If you work on a project for credit, register for CS400 Independent Study.  Or, if you are completing a project and writing an undergraduate thesis, register for CS499.  Both require a brief proposal to be completed in advance.
