Undergraduate FAQ
- Can I count one of the SEAS Division of Continuing Eduction (e.g., T81)courses as a CS elective?
- No. The SEAS Division of Continuing Education courses (such as T81 courses) cannot be counted as a CS elective. As with University College Courses, with approval they can be transferred. However, if approved for transfer credit, they only count toward the 120 units (or 124 units for CoE majors) required for graduation. Also, the grade is not transferred. The Engineering School Registrar's office maintains a list of approved transfer courses including University College courses and SEAS Division of Continuing Education courses. For any courses not listed OR listed with an evaluation date that is more than 2 years old, go to Lopata 324 to find out if (and how) it will transfer.
- I'm doing the B.S.C.S. degree option. Can I use SSM 202 as my fourth breadth course?
- No, since you are required to take courses in three different departments and the other three courses that count toward this requirement are CS 101G, SSM 326A, and SSM 317.
- What is the Residency Requirement?
- 30 Units of 300-level higher courses from SEAS. If you are getting a CS and CoE degree, then you must have 15 units of CoE/EE courses taken from SEAS and 15 units of CS courses (disjoint from the 15 units of CoE/EE) courses taken from SEAS.
- How many Pass/Fail courses can I take?
- There is a limit of 6 units of coursework taken Pass/Fail per semester with an overall limit of 18 units of coursework taken pass fail.
Note that the date to change from Grade Option to Pass/Fail is very early in the semester (September 15, 1998 for the Spring 98 term) while the date to change from Pass/Fail to a Grade Option is the same date as the last day to drop a course (November 13, 1998 for the Spring 98 term).
- What is the Chemistry Requirement for BSCS or BSCoE?
- For either the BSCS degree or the BSCoE degree, the Chemistry requirement is Chem 111A and 151.
- Do CS 151, CS 160, CS 265, CS 401, or CS 402 count as CS electives?
- No. For CS majors, only courses with a T, S, M, or A suffix can count as a CS elective. Hence, none of these courses count as a CS elective. However, they would count toward the 120 units (or 124 units for CoE majors) required for graduation
- What courses can be counted toward the two CS electives for the CS minor?
- For CS minors, only CS 201, CS 265 or courses with a T, S, M, or A suffix can count as a CS elective.
