Placement Exam

Students with significant computer science background and experience in object-oriented programming are invited to take the CSE placement exam during orientation week for possible placement in CSE131X (the accelerated introductory course) or placement in another course beyond CSE 131. Check your orientation schedule for the time and location for this exam. You do not need to take this exam if you are planning to take CSE 131.

The placement exam is designed assuming that you are comfortable with the following concepts: recursion, iteration (loops), constructors, methods with parameters and return values, classes and objects, references (pointers), simple data structures (arrays, linked lists, binary search trees, maps, etc.), class hierarchies, inheritance, method overriding, and polymorphism. The exam assumes a working knowledge of Java that is sufficient to read, modify, and write Java source code. Familiarity with specialized Java packages is not assumed.

Note: Students earning a 4 or 5 on the AB Computer Science AP exam are awarded 3 units of credit equivalent to CSE 126, and may continue their study of Computer Science with CSE 131X.  However, students with AP credit should take the CSE placement exam if they are considering starting in a course other than CSE131 or CSE131X.  Students with an unusually strong background beyond the scope of the AP exam and CSE 131 should consult Dr. Sally Goldman (sg@cse.wustl.edu; (314) 935-7545) for guidance on appropriate placement.

For a summary of selected computer science courses without prerequisites, see the Entry-Level Course Summary.
