Graduate Application Information
The Department generally requires a completed application form available at https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=wustl-eng, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant's abilities. The department requires results from the general GRE as well as original certified transcripts from previous academic institutions. For foreign institutions, the department requires literal translations of the grades; applicants should not attempt to convert foreign grades into any other grading system. The application fee cannot be waived and is nonrefundable.
All of the aforementioned materials should be submitted with the application. Applicants should request that ETS forward recent test scores from the general GRE and a subject test, if it was taken. (The ETS reporting code for Washington University is 6172 for the GRE.) The subject test in computer science is strongly recommended, but not required, although a subject test in another technical area may be substituted for applicants without computer science degrees. Applicants whose native language is not English must, in addition, submit recent test scores from both the TOEFL and TWE or writing essay. (The ETS reporting code for Washington University for the TOEFL is 6929, department code 78.) On average, the majority of students in our department have TOEFL scores exceeding 575, with a CBT of at least 233.
Applicants should keep in mind that there are no predetermined cutoffs for items such as test scores, grade point averages, and class ranks. Each application is considered as a whole, so evidence of weakness in one area may be offset by evidence of strength in another. Therefore, it is to the applicant's advantage to include descriptions of publications or unusual qualifications or experience in the personal statement.
This handy checklist is designed to help you gather the materials required for admission.
Application Timetable
The table below indicates the dates by which all application materials must be received if the applicant is to be included in the given round of admission (same dates for International applicants).
